This Amsterdam Engagement Session was the BEST because it was with one of my best friends! I met Carolin when she came to my hometown as a German exchange student for our junior year of high school. Carolin and Patrick are currently both law students in Germany, and we met up in Amsterdam for hugs and a quick session!

Having had the opportunity to photograph in Amsterdam often, getting to explore it with my friends was the dream. From the narrow streets lined with charming brick houses and beautiful flowers and greenery all around. To canals and all the bridges, Amsterdam has it all! Bicycles were all over!! I will forever love this city.
Tips for Planning a Destination Engagement Session
First, since both Carolin and Patrick knew Amsterdam I chatted with them about what locations they thought we should check out. From there I did a LOT of research myself (thank you Google & Google Maps!). When planning engagement photos in a new destination, I like to find out the following about the area and locations:
- What are places and looks that this area is known for? For Amsterdam I knew the canals, bridges, bicycles, and brick buildings were important characteristics!
- Are the locations I’m considering busy or popular? Will this spot be busy with tourists?
- Is there a certain time of day that might work best for this location?
- What is the lighting like in this area? Will there be sunlight? When is golden hour?
A million other things run through my head, but I always have a solid plan going into sessions in a new place! If possible, I’ll arrive a day or so early to scope out locations in person too!
My destination wedding couples often fly me out to their hometowns or to an epic location to meet for engagement photos! I LOVE exploring new places, so it was so inspiring and refreshing to photograph my best friend and her love in Amsterdam!
