First of all, there’s something so magical about photo shoots in the cold. Especially in the Colorado mountains. Talk about fairytale vibes! The quiet beauty of the Rockies in winter makes for the most romantic backdrop: endless white peaks, cozy layers, and those playful moments that happen when you’re crunching through snow together. If you’re considering engagement photos in the snow, here are three tips to make the most of your time in front of the camera:
1. Wear Layers…
When it comes to winter photo outfits, layers are your best friend. Think sweaters under jackets, cozy vests, or beanies you can toss on or off. This couple kept it classic with dark jeans, warm boots, and neutral layers. It was perfect for mixing and matching throughout the shoot. By peeling off a layer or swapping accessories, you’ll get more variety without having to fully change outfits in the snow. Plus, you’ll stay comfortable, which is key for looking relaxed in your photos. Also, make sure to have those warm underlayers too!
2. Bring a Blanket to your engagement photos in the snow:
Not only does a blanket keep you warm between shots, but it also adds variety to your gallery. A striped throw or neutral-toned blanket can double as a cozy prop for snuggling up together. In these photos, this sweet couple wrapped up against the chill while the mountains stretched out behind them, creating some of the sweetest, most natural moments. Blankets also give you a chance to slow down and take in the view without shivering!
3. Keep Moving!
Colder month sessions can get chilly fast, so the trick is to keep moving. Running hand in hand down a snowy road, piggyback rides, twirls, or even playful snowball fights not only keep your blood flowing but also bring out real laughter and connection. Some of the best photos from this Colorado engagement session came from those in-between moments. The kisses mid-run, bursts of laughter, and big smiles as they kicked snow up into the air.
